As the incoming presidential administration signals a shift in priorities, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs are facing significant rollbacks across the U.S., Walmart, one of the nation's largest employers, recently scaled back its DEI initiatives — marking a concerning trend that could redefine corporate culture for years to come. For PR and comms pros, this moment calls for renewed commitment to advancing DEI in our industry.

Why DEI matters now more than ever
PR thrives on trust, authenticity and connection. In a time when corporate DEI policies are under scrutiny, grassroots movements and community organizations are well positioned to fill the gap and will be even more vital for diverse businesses and underrepresented voices. These efforts are not just ethical necessities — they’re business essentials in our ever-evolving multicultural interconnected world.

PR pros are uniquely positioned to champion DEI, ensuring diverse perspectives remain central to storytelling. As DEI initiatives in industries like retail and tech are scaled back, the comms community must continue to amplify equity in what we do every day.

Local support for national change
Cincinnati PRSA has long recognized the importance of DEI in shaping the future of our profession. That’s why we’re bringing back our diversity scholarship, which supports emerging talent in PR, marketing and comms who reflect an inclusive world.  By investing in diverse voices today, we equip our industry with leaders who can tackle tomorrow’s challenges.

Scholarships like these are more than financial; they’re testimonies of our values as communicators. They affirm that representation matters in crafting messages, influencing public opinion and driving societal change.

So, what more can we do?
As PR and comms professionals, our role is clear: we must continue to amplify the stories of underrepresented communities, hold organizations accountable to DEI promises and insert equity and inclusion into everything we create. Partner with local organizations that prioritize DEI, support policies that foster inclusion, and educate clients and colleagues on why DEI is an important tool that helps organizations progress, despite rollbacks across the country.

This is a critical moment for DEI within PR. Let’s rise to the challenge — not just as practitioners but as advocates for a more inclusive future. Together, we can ensure that the rollback of corporate DEI programs doesn’t derail the progress our industry and communities have fought so hard to achieve.
