What inspired you to pursue a career in public relations, and what do you love most about the profession?
I took an introductory public relations class when I was a student at Kent State. At the time, I was still unsure whether I wanted to pursue journalism or explore other areas within the school. I had some incredible professors who pointed out strengths that aligned well with PR, and that encouragement ultimately led me to choose the PR track for the rest of my coursework, a decision I’ve never regretted.
Can you share a memorable PR project or campaign you’ve worked on and what made it special?
Two experiences stand out to me over the years. In a previous role, I spent a week in Las Vegas as part of a social media street team giving away dream experiences at a trade show. I captured content on the ground and sent it back to our client and account lead in real time. It was a whirlwind week — I rode in a limo while playing Pokémon Go, saw Skrillex perform at a club, and even filmed zip lining in Old Vegas.
More recently, I met Gov. Andy Beshear during a press conference for a tourism client celebrating National Travel and Tourism Week in Kentucky. Despite the current president being in town on a campaigning trip, we secured extensive media coverage, and the event went off seamlessly, helping elevate Northern Kentucky’s visibility in a big way.
What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone just starting out in public relations?
Read the news often and pay attention to how stories are told. It’s tougher than ever to stand out in today’s media landscape, which has evolved dramatically over the years. To secure great coverage for clients, you have to think like a reporter and approach every story with creativity. It’s easy to rely on the same contacts, and there’s a certain comfort in that, but I encourage you to think outside the box and constantly look for new ways to reach and engage your audiences.
How do you stay creative and motivated in such a fast-paced industry?
I try to consume information from a variety of sources — reading, spending time on social media, and listening to podcasts to name a few. It helps spark new ideas and inspires creative ways to communicate on behalf of clients. I also follow many friends who work in media or create content, because you can learn so much from the stories they share and the things they’re passionate about outside of work. At its core, this business is about building relationships, and the stronger those relationships are the more creative you become because great creative ideas always come from strong collaboration.
What’s something about you—whether a hobby, interest, or fun fact—that others might be surprised to learn?
I’m an avid reader — always fiction, and usually a mix of mystery, horror, fantasy, and romance. I’ve already read 88 books in 2025, so if you have any good recommendations, connect with me on LinkedIn and send them my way!
